South Africa is in the top 5 of countries with the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate worldwide. The number of infections has passed 6 million and is growing.
The South African province KwaZulu-Natal, where Uthando has her projects, has an infection rate of 20-44%. This means that in some parts of the province, almost half the population is infected with HIV/AIDS.
The HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa is relatively young; 10 years ago the infection rate was only 1%. If the current tendency continues, the number of HIV/AIDS-infections and -deaths will keep rising the next five years; in short, the worst is yet to come.
