HIV/AIDS in Africa
Of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide, almost 27 millioin live in Africa. Sub-Saharan Africa is the worst affected part of the world. The number of children that is affected is staggering: 12% of all children in Sub-Saharan Africa has lost one or both parents.
Even though only 2% of the world population lives in Sub-Saharan Africa, 30% of all HIV/AIDS infected people live here. In the poorest regions of the world the virus is spreading like wildfire:
- More than 60% of people living with HIV/AIDS live in Africa
- Of all the children in Africa, 12% is orphaned (and has lost one or both parents)
- In total, 34 million children in this area are orphaned; this number is expected to rise to 42 million by 2010
But not all figures related to Africa are negative. Experience has shown that the virus can indeed by controlled. In Uganda for example, where through sincerety, prevention and free medication by government the infection rate has gone from 30% to 8% in the past 10 years.
