HIV/AIDS globally

In 2005 alone, more than three million people died of AIDS. Worldwide, more than 40 million people live with the disease. Every day, 14.000 people are infected. The propagation of the virus is far from being contained.

HIV/AIDS hits hard, especially among people aged between 15 and 50. Families are torn apart when parents become sick or die. But HIV/AIDS also has a big impact nationally. The devestation of the working part of the population is ruining the economies of countries that weren't in a very good shape to begin with.

The economies of these poor countries can hardly handle the impact of large parts of the working population being wiped out by HIV/AIDS. It is up to future generations to live with this legacy.

The most troubling consequence of this crisis is the number of children that is affected or infected by the disease. More than 13 million children younger than 15 have lost one or both parents to the virus.

The figures below show the extent of the misery:

  • More than 40 million people worldwide are living with HIV/AIDS
  • Of these 40 million people, more than 2 million are children younger than 15
  • In 2005 alone, AIDS claimed more than 3 million lives
  • More than 13 million children have lost their parents to AIDS
  • This number is expected to rise to 25 million by 2010
